Considering Fundoplication - The Anti-Reflux Surgery
Are you considering fundoplication for your child? If so, there are many things to consider. This article is written by a mom who's son has undergone the nissen fundoplication. I am not a doctor, just a mom who has been there and researched this subject inside and out.
Making the fundo decision is one of the hardest decisions you will ever make in your life! It can be absolutely agonizing. There are many things to consider about the fundoplication surgery. And, either way, you will always wonder if you have made the right choice.
Have you exhausted all other options? Have you tried all medication combinations? Exhausted all other treatments? Has your child had time to outgrow reflux symptoms?
Some reasons to consider the fundoplication are respiratory illness, esophagitis, FTT, failure of meds to reduce acid, and more serious complications of GERD such as pneumonias, recurring infections (ear, nose, throat, sinus), life-threatening complications, and pre-cancerous conditions.
When considering the fundoplication surgery, consider getting second and possibly third opinions. The fundoplication should only be considered as a last resort. It does not cure the child, and your child will deal with different issues after the surgery. Also, interview several different surgeons and make sure that your surgeon is experienced and highly qualified. This can make the difference in success.
