Foods that Aggravate GERD
Through experience, many have learned that certain foods make reflux
worse and should be avoided. Here is a partial list of those foods. As
with anything, you will need to experiment to see which foods are fine
for you and for your child, and which foods tend to make the reflux
symptoms worse.
Beverages
whole milk, chocolate milk, chocolate shakes or drinks, citrus drinks
or juices, carbonated beverages, tomato juice, vegetable juice, coffee.
Breads and cereals
breads and cereals prepared with high fat ingredients such as
croissants, doughnuts, sweet rolls, and muffins.
Fats
gravies, bacon, meat drippings, butter, margarine, vegetable oils,
heavy cream, sour cream.
Fruits
oranges, lemons, tangerines, pineapples, grapefruits, and any other
citrus fruits or juices.
Meat and meat substitutes
fried meat, poultry, fish, or eggs; luncheon meats, hot dogs,
sausages, refried beans.
Potatoes and potato substitutes
french fries, potato chips, pasta served with cream sauces.
Soups
regular cream and tomato-based soups.
Other
butter, coconut, chocolate, and cream candies.
Vegetables
fried or creamy style vegetables, tomatoes and tomato products.
Miscellaneous
spices and herbs in tomato-based sauces, spearmint, peppermint, chili
and jalapeno peppers, vinegar.
