Questions to ask Potential Surgeon
Here is a great list of questions to ask potential surgeons when considering the fundoplication procedure. This will give you a good indication about what the surgeon has in mind and will help you in deciding if it is the right choice and if this is the right surgeon for your child.
-Why do you think that my son/daughter is a good
candidate for the fundo?
-How many fundoplications do you perform in a week?
-What do you consider your success rate to be?
-How long have you been performing the fundoplication surgery?
-Do you view the fundoplication as a cure?
-What complications do you feel are common?
-How do you handle your patients post- fundo? (very important)
-How many of the surgeries that you have performed have been successful for the reasons you are performing it on my son/daughter?
-How many have not?
-Are there any other tests that can be tried first?
-What is your method for fundoplication open/laparoscopic?
-What time limit do you give before considering the fundoplication?
-What do you suggest trying before considering the fundoplication?
-Will you be the one performing the procedure and the aftercare?
(You would think he would, but a lot of times this isn't the case.)
-What medication do you prescribe post fundo?
-What type of fundoplications do you prefer to perform?
-Do you prefer to do the wrap as tightly as possible,
or loose enough that the child should be able to burp
and vomit if absolutely needed?
-What do you feel the recovery time actually is for
the fundoplication?
These questions will help you get a good feel for the surgeon and how realistic he is about this surgery, especially on the recovery time question. It takes a long time to recover, and I wouldn't say they ever completely recover. They will be different. If your surgeon is willing to admit this, that is a start.
