Raeden's Story
The Birth Raeden was born on January 15, 2006, at 36.5 weeks. I'd been in labour since 20 weeks and was so glad she was finally coming. She weighed 5 lbs. 12 oz. and was 18.5 inches at birth. Raeden ate like a CHAMP and latched on with no problem. She was on the warmer for two hours. It Starts Looking back on it, I should have pressed the issue more, but I didn't. I'd never had a gerdling before. Freja had no spit up problems at all. Raeden had jaundice for 6 weeks after birth. We were at the doctor's or the hospital every day almost. I mentioned SEVERAL times how she threw up literally nonstop. I was told that since she was gaining weight to not worry. When I told them that she only had one bowel movement every nine days, I was told it was because she was breastfed and not to worry. For 4 months, I was in and out of the doctor's office telling them about her wheezing, throwing up, lack of bowel movements, and her choking. They discovered through RAST testing that she had a milk allergy and a soy allergy. I cut them all out of my diet and the problems continued. The Scare On May 19th, I had Raeden into the pediatrician's office again and this time was seen by the Nurse Practitioner, who told me that some babies are just prone to spitting up. I should have pushed the issue then, but I didn't. At about 12:30 a.m. on Friday, May 20th, Raeden stopped breathing and turned blue. I'd tried to go to bed at midnight and couldn't. Raeden was laying in her swing. She didn't make a sound. I just happened to glance at her and she was turning blue. I grabbed her from the swing, threw her over my legs and beat on her back. She spit up ALL over me and started breathing fine. I called 911. At the hospital, they did an upper GI and she was diagnosed with GERD and Sleep Apnea, and put on an apnea monitor and on Zantac. The ER doctor told me if I hadn't been awake, the next morning she would have been classed as a SIDs Case. The Road to a Diagnosis Raeden had her first Pulminary Apointment at Riley Children's Hospital set for Monday, June 5th. I prayed we'd get to see the doctor without any trouble, but of course things rarely work out how we want them to. On June 2nd at about 1:00 a.m., we had to rush Raeden to the hospital and were admitted. She had bronchiolitis and spent the night getting breathing treatments and on the hospital's apnea monitor and getting blood taken. We were told to up her Zantac and she was on Omnicef for 10 days, as well as abuterol treatments. On June 5th, we saw the pulmonary doctor. After doing x-rays, an upper GI, and watching Raeden throw up on me nonstop for 10 minutes, they did a sweat test and told me they were officially diagnosing her with GERD and asthma, as well as the sleep apnea. They took her off the Zantac and put her on 3 mL of Prilosec daily, and?added Nasonex and Pulmicort to her breathing treatments. A sleep study was scheduled for June 14th at 7:00 a.m. The sleep study, to put it simply, was heck. Raeden did NOT like being hooked up to all that stuff. Through the sleep study, we discovered in 3 hours that Raeden had 6 obstructive apnea spells that were almost positively related to her asthma. In July, Raeden outright started REFUSING the Prilosec (I don't blame her--it's NASTY stuff), so she was switched to Prevacid and Reglan. The doctor called it in. Two hours later, I discovered NO WHERE within 55 miles of us has Prevacid! NO WHERE! So, we started to drive up to Riley to pick up her Prevacid (1 hour drive). At the end of August, I stopped breastfeeding, and Raeden was put on Similac Alimentum formula. In early September, we hit a snag when Raeden got bronchitis again and all the coughing set her GERD into full throttle. She did get over it 2 weeks later with no lasting problems though. Thank God! In late October, Raeden aspirated and got pretty sick again. We had a 3 day hospital stay, but once again she came out on top. Then, during the last part of October, Raeden started acting up with tummy problems again. Her stomach muscles were spasming, she was spitting up again, not sleeping, and she just seemed to be right back where she started. We saw the GI doctor for the first time on November 10th, and after he did a rectal exam he noticed narrowing and extra tissue in there. He ordered a gastric emptying scan, and then said that after we got that test out of the way, we'd do a pH probe and a lower GI. On the 15th of November, Raeden had her emptying scan, and her motility is normal! No DGE! WOOHOO! Unfortunately, the poor baby refluxed 18 times in one hour. That is where our story is right now--in the process of waiting for more tests... Written by: Melissa, Alisteal
